Session 1

Aloha Divine One,

This week is about discovering your current needs and values. Needs can shift and change based on what's happening right now. Most unmet needs will come up and relax once they're met and satisfied. Some needs stay. For example, my need for integrity is always up. I need integrity in my life daily regardless of how much integrity I already have within me and around me. While needs can shift and change, values tend to stay the same. Your values are who you are at your core. Your core can shift and change, especially after life changing incidents. This is why some people change after a serious illness, divorce, becoming a parent, an accident, or some other life changing event.

Let's start by getting centered and grounded. I recommend this 10 Minute Meditation to calm and quiet your mind. However, if you have another method of centering and grounding yourself, do that! One way is not the only answer for everyone. The main thing is that you clear and quiet your mind so you can allow your heart to engage. Your heart, soul, intuition, or whatever you call it, is the part of you that truly knows who you are. Your heart doesn't have to prove itself to anyone, make anyone else happy, be different, or defend itself. It's the part of you that knows what's right for you. Let your heart answer your questions on your Needs and Values Assessment to ensure they're your true answers.

So find a quiet spot, calm and quiet your mind, then take your assessment quickly. If you get easily distracted or have a hard time answering the questions, walk away. Go for a walk, dance around, or do something you enjoy to get out of your head. Then meditate or use your preferred method to center and ground yourself and go again. Allow your answers to flow through you and release any judgments. You are who you are and you are worthy, deserving, and whole just as you are. So honor yourself and allow your answers to flow to get to really know and accept yourself.

Once complete, I recommend reflecting on your needs and values to assist you with processing and integrating them. Journaling (writing them out) can provide more insight, but don't let that stop you. You can reflect by simply asking yourself these questions and talking through your answers:

  • Did your answers surprise you?

  • Do your needs and values resonate with you?

  • Are you currently meeting any of your needs?

  • Are you currently living by any of your values?

  • Do you have any conflicts with your needs or values? (example: do things out of obligation but have the need for independence or freedom)

  • Are you relieved to know these answers?

  • What small change can you make this week to either fulfill a need or live by a value?

I also recommend to keep your needs and values where you will see them daily. It can be as simple as post it notes around your house, drawing them and keeping the drawing visible, or creating a graphic as your phone wallpaper. You just want to see them as a daily reminder since life can get busy.

We'll talk about this deeper next week, but basically, you have your roadmap. Fulfill and satisfy your current needs, release expectations, create and lovingly hold boundaries, and live by your values. This is much easier said than done, but this is why your program is 12 weeks long! We'll gently explore each step forward with love and grace. NO BEATING YOURSELF UP! You may take 10 steps forward and 5 steps back. That's still 5 steps forward! As I've said before and will continue to say (and hopefully you start to say to yourself), you cannot beat yourself up into greatness! You have to love yourself there.

Lastly, some housekeeping:

  • Your brain is a greedy organ. Drink lots of water and eat a nutritious meal or snack after doing this work. Water will help you flush out the old and nutrition will help you build a strong new. If you get a headache after doing this work, it's just because things are shifting. Drink plenty of water, rest if needed, and be gentle on yourself. Treat yourself as you would a precious child. Because you are a precious human!

  • I attended an internationally accredited coaching school to learn proven methods, techniques, and tools. Cheryl Weir's Needs and Values Program is the best tool I have found to quickly assess needs and values. I have tested other tools, but find this one the easiest and most accurate. While I'd prefer you not share this program with others, feel free to share this assessment tool. It's eye opening for most people and can assist them in living a happy and purposeful life.
